Screen time can be defined as the time spent by an individual in front of a man made screen. This can include televisions, computers, laptops, mobiles, tablets and gaming consoles. Increased screen times and television exposure in children are linked to sleep disturbances, decrease in attention span, lower academic achievement, low self-esteem, sedentary lifestyle, disturbances in eating patterns, increase in cravings for unhealthy foods and even weight gain.
Research has shown that more than two hours of screen time per day is associated with negative consequences on the physical, physiological, social and emotional health of children. The average screen-time for children today is five to six hours per day. None the less, this needs to be limited to less than an hour. Factors such as having multiple television sets at home, television sets in bedrooms and lack of parental monitoring are also related to excessive television viewing among children.
Not only increased screen times but also the type of content viewed on television is a determinant of children’s dietary behaviors. Children are exposed to advertisements that market unhealthy snack and junk foods. If children were to view more advertisements on the importance of physical activity or consumption of fruits and vegetables, then excessive television viewing might not have been such a strong risk factor for childhood obesity.
Asupportive home environment is critical to limit screen times of children. Parents can impose rules to restrict use of television after a certain time duration. They can also be educated and empowered to make healthier choices for the family. According to a study, parents that were educated on harmful effects of excessive television exposure were able to set rules limiting excessive screen times among children more effectively.
Interventions need to be developed that promote reduction in screen-time through focusing on changing parental behaviors and modifying the home media environment. Parents should act as role models for children and try to reduce their screen times and increase their physical activity.
