COVID-19 Lockdown and Depression in 2020

Pandemics have been playing havoc to mankind since ancient times. According to the Washington Post of April 7, 2020, the 21st century has met with several outbreaks including SARS-CoV, MERS, Swine Flu, Ebola, etc. now, in 2020 COVID-19 has been a major challenge worldwide and the devastation caused by COVID-19 continues around the globe. With no proper medication, many countries enlisting China, UK, Germany, France, and Italy underwent severe or partial lockdown to avoid the spread of the virus. This lockdown halted all the social activities. No schools, no offices, no entertainment. The condition allowed families to sit together for the longest period ever. On the contrary, studies show that lockdown has psychologically affected individuals from every age group and proved to be worst for people already suffering from psychological conditions. The studies have shown a strong link between COVID-19 lockdown and Depression and anxiety

What are Depression and Anxiety?

Statistics of WHO report that Depression is the most common and the second major reason for deaths worldwide. Depression is a serious condition that takes the sufferers on the verge of suicide if not treated properly. Depression is a complex condition that causes a combination of several symptoms in patients. Depression mainly affects the way one feels, thinks, and acts.

Symptoms of Depression

The common symptoms of depression include:

  • A general sad feeling
  • Loss of interest in once-favorite activities
  • Eventual Weight loss or weight gain
  • Lethargy
  • Overwhelming with the feelings of worthlessness
  • Difficulty in carrying out the normal routine tasks
  • Difficulty in decision making
  • Being suicidal

The condition of depression is diagnosed if a combination of any of the above symptoms lasts for more than two weeks. Depression may take over a person in response to trauma such as the death of a loved one, loss of a job, or ending of a relationship. It may seem like sadness or simply loneliness but depression is much more than that.

Depression & COVID-19 2020

Our generation had not faced any condition like COVID-19 up till now. So, there is a lot of feeling that we are going through and still trying to cope with the condition. These feelings include fear, uncertainty, anxiety and the feeling of loneliness tops the list. A mix of such feelings makes a person vulnerable to depression, already vulnerable people with no prior symptoms of depression start developing the symptoms. Undoubtedly, for the patients of depression lockdown is an extremely difficult phase to pass through.  A Chinese study claims that 35% of the participants attributed their psychological issues to the COVID-19 lockdown 2020.

A study carried out by Dr. Maria Loades a clinical psychologist at the University of Bath, UK reports that the COVID-19 Lockdown has increased the risk of depression and anxiety. Moreover, they found out that young people are more vulnerable to depression as they stated that:

“Children and adolescents are probably more likely to experience high rates of depression and probably anxiety during and after enforced isolation ends. This may increase as enforced isolation continues. Clinical services should offer preventative support and early intervention where possible and be prepared for an increase in mental health problems.”   

Another source confirms the significant increase in depression among both men and women. It gives us the figures for the trend of depression cases such as a rise from 11% to 27% in women and from 7% to 18% in men.
